How Child Support Is Calculated in Wisconsin

While child support is often viewed in terms of a payer and a recipient of support, it is imperative to appreciate that both parents are responsible financially for their children. The court takes into consideration several factors when computing child support payments such as the income of both parties, the amount of time each parent spends with the children, and if one or both parents are supporting other children.

In Wisconsin, the standard percentage of income to calculate child support payments are as follows:

  • 17% of total earnings for one child
  • 25% of total earnings for two children
  • 29% of total earnings for three children
  • 31% of total earnings for four children
  • 34% of total earnings for five or more children

Sources of income include employee salary, tips, commissions, and other bonuses from work as well as interests from investments and properties, Worker's Compensation benefits, personal injury payments, military allowances, and Veteran’s benefits. Parents should keep in mind that this part of their divorce decree is about their children and not them. As parents, we only want the best for our children and that includes their financial security.
